PowerSelect is a tool for selecting icons in Workbench by using search patterns.
Using mouse, selecting specific files (JPG image files, project files, files starting with letter A, files created on a certain day, tagged files, etc.) among other files is a daunting task and could take minutes, while PowerSelect selects the files for you in seconds.
Making a selection is easy:
Open a disk or a drawer where you would like to select icons and press the PowerSelect hot key. In the PowerSelect GUI, define the search criteria: enter a search pattern and select the target which the pattern search is applied to. PowerSelect will select all the icons which match your criteria.
Example use cases:
The most common use case is to select icons from a drawer window by name. Besides selecting icons from drawer windows, you can also select disks, leaved out objects, appicons, and iconified applications from the desktop. Basically anything that Workbench can display, PowerSelect can target.
If you need to change a common tool type, it is easy to do with the help of PowerSelect. In figure 4 the user has selected all commodities that have the tool type SHOWHINTS set to YES. Once the matching objects have been selected, the user just needs to select Information… from the Workbench’s Icons menu and the tool type can then be changed in the opened icon information windows.
If you are hosting a large collection, PowerSelect can help you to locate and open the wanted items in seconds. In figure 5 you can see a Classic Amiga game collection stored on a disk. Each game has its own drawer that is tagged with Title, System, Publisher, Developer, Genre, and Year tags. The user has just selected all strategy games that have been published in 1992. The tag feature is not limited to collections. It can also be used for categorising files and drawers, ranking media files, giving your project files and drawers status indicators, etc.
Picking up files by their version number is a very laborious task but with PowerSelect it is really easy. Version is not the only property which can be targeted. You can select objects by their flags, by date, by file content (see figure 6), and more.
